Clogrennane Lime Ltd. operates from two plants; Clogrennane Lime, situated outside Carlow town and Toonagh Lime Works, Ballybrody, Ennis Co. Clare. Both plants are adjacent to deposits of high purity calcium carbonate deposits, the raw material for the production of lime. Such high purity deposits are critical in ensuring the highest standard of the end products.
White Rhino chemical lime is produced by calcining calcium carbonate at approximately 1000°C in a Maerz regenerative vertical shaft kiln to form calcium oxide. This calcium oxide (quicklime) is available to customers in either the lump or crushed grade. Further processing converts the calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide (dry hydrated lime) or aqueous calcium hydroxide (milk of lime). In many applications chemical lime reabsorbs carbon dioxide. White Rhino lime products are the most cost effective alkalis available (pH 12.45 in solution), far cheaper than Sodium Hydroxide. White Rhino calcium oxide has the added benefit of reacting exothermically in contact with water releasing 1140 kj/kg of heat.
